Business as usual?

Age of Sigmar has been released, and being the new hotness in town, everyone seems to have moved on from Warhammer Fantasy Battle. Whether this will still be the case in the months ahead remains to be seen, but for now my prospects of getting more than the odd game in seem pretty thin. So what am I doing? I am painting 8th edition regiments of Empire models, of course! Can't let common sense and a bleak outlook get in the way of my backwards progress.

This will eventually be a regiment of 60 including the unit filler, as that seems to be my go-to size for proper blocks of Empire troops. At the moment it is a fully painted unit of 34. I'll push on with the rest shortly.
My "Ostland" contingent continues to grow. These guys match existing regiments of Greatswords and Handgunners. I have a regiment of Swordsmen earmarked for this colour scheme too, so I guess they'll reach of the size of a decent army in their own right at some point.
This unit filler was deliberately made shorter to allow it to actually face forwards in the unit if I wanted to. Of course in order to fit it on the base, the horse is right at the front. Waving his hoof well over the edge. Pretty much into the middle of whatever is standing directly in front. Poor planning. I'll have to model something up specifically to go in front of the filler if I don't want it to be sitting in the front rank.
This is now my third wagon. I figure I will soon have enough for a convincing baggage train, and then we can fight out some ambush scenarios to fight over the loot.
It's a boring supply wagon. But that might be beer there at the back...

Loving the unit filler, glad to see you are a 8th edition stalwart

    1. Cheers. yeah, I'm not going to let go of my hobby just because GW decides to stop making it.

  2. Onwards brother! Never let obsolescence get in the way of a good unit!

    1. Maybe at some point. Weeknights seem to be a busy time for me, generally. You're not able to make it to a Hampton club meet on a Saturday?

  4. 8th ed will never die! If it wasn't for the awful time difference, I'd suggest a skype match.

  5. The way you paint big units, you really need to give KOW a go. It might only be half the ruleset that Warhammer 8th is (maybe) but that still makes it twice the game AoS is.....

In last weeks game I had 80 spearelves, 40 archers, 20 Swordmasters and 20 cav plus a few war machines and characters, in 2,000 points. If nothing else, it offers a really cinematic aspect to the game.

    1. It's on the cards. I've given it one trial game with a slightly older beta version of the rules. I'm going to try it a few more times before deciding if it's something I want to keep playing.

You realise most of my units are too big for KoW, right? Only truly weak things like Goblins and Zombies get to form up in 60 man Legions. Oh well, I guess it means the unit fillers are not required. :(

    2. Or you can run a unit of 40 and a unit of 20.....

Or paint some more, for two hordes of 40. It's the sort of challenge you seem to be up for, Mr 90+ painted Empire Knights :)

  6. glad to see you have seen the light.

Would have been a real shame not to have your blogging output to give me a much needed kick up the jacksie to pull out the brushes.

    1. I'm not sure I've necessarily seen any light. I've just returned to painting up my Empire army as some sort of default plan of action.

And round here we are all about the kicking of jacksies!

  7. AoS is burning strong out here too, and I've thought about painting up my beastmen in defiance. However, I've fallen into my darkest love--conversions--and am just making minis for characters I've built for different games.

Hope you get a game soon! Always enjoy the battle reports, and what better way to pump a fist in defense of the old ways than another of your massive game battle reports?

Also, Kings of War 2 seems like a loyal defense of big block battles; I liked it! It's surprising how little from Fantasy I find myself missing; magic is less engaging, certainly, but I even enjoy the combat resolution system and the set attacks per block.

    1. I'll be playing a game or two of KoW tomorrow, so maybe I'll get a bit more of a feel then. I'll share my thoughts when I have some...

  8. "Backwards progress" soon you will be basing regiments 4 across or even looking around for the dusty copy of 3rd edition. Oh the horror! Mind you this sort of horror is preferable to the Gold rattle can for your AoS minis at $41.00, and a gold paint pot for $9.00 now that is a horror story worth avoiding. By the way loving the unit fillers (makes nice objectives for games too), and for my 2 cents KOW just might scratch that itch for many of us.

    1. I'm pretty sure I saw that the gold spray costs $48 here on the GW website.

And no, I don't see myself moving backward through the editions. Of the ones I have played (4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th) I like 8th the best. It's not perfect, but it suits my tastes the best and is the best for playing large games.

  9. Glad you're continuing; as many here are saying, it's a good motivator for me as well to paint my units (and repaint old ones) x) ah, those big units are just demoralizing to paint...

    1. I'm doing the remaining 26 guys from the unit in a single batch. At least, that is how I am starting. We'll see how long I stick with what is clearly a terrible plan...

  10. It sounds like the route I was planning, just keep on going like nothing happened. Looks good by the way :)
