So, where to now?

This is just a bit of a general hobby update. I don't post as many of these as I used to, even when I am actually getting some hobby work done. I'll see if I can get more into the habit again.

First, a bit of catching up to do. My mad sprint to try to get ready for Cancon was only modestly successful. As you might have seen in the tournament photos, both the flying wolves and the halflings got to the point where they were usable, but not finished. The halflings in particular didn't really get close, but were hiding in amongst finished ones, which helped to distract from my shame.

I haven't taken any really decent specific shots of either the wolves or the halflings in their incomplete state, but this will give some idea...
Not the best shot, but there is some very black hair in there, and a severe lack of detail if you look at them up close.
The wolfybirbs actually got nearly finished. More finished than in this pic actually, given the bases were finished. This was to show a friend where I got to on the wings, which in the end were about the only incomplete detail. I had to call it given I was out of time, and decided unfinished wings were something I could get away with.

Cancon 2020 Aftermath - Part 6

This is the final part of my report of the recent Clash of Kings Australia tournament that was held as part of Cancon 2020. You can find the previous part of the report here, or go back to the first part here.

Game 6 - Control
Jeff Traish - Forces of the Abyss
  • Horde of Abyssal Ghouls
  • Regiment of Abyssal Ghouls
  • Regiment of Abyssal Ghouls
  • Horde of Molochs with Blade of Slashing
  • Horde of Molochs with Mace of Crushing
  • Abyssal Fiend
  • Manifestation of Ba'el
  • Abyssal Warlock
  • Abyssal Warlock
  • Abyssal Warlock
  • Horde of Lesser Obsidian Golems (Abyssal Dwarf allies)
  • Horde of Lesser Obsidian Golems (Abyssal Dwarf allies)
  • Hexcaster with Weakness (Abyssal Dwarf allies)
Well, I had done it again. After my "correction" game dropped me back into the middle tables, I had won two more games and now I found myself on what was probably one of the top 3. I think I was in 5th place coming into the final round. Not really where I had intended to be. And now I was to play Jeff, a man who had actually played more than 2 games of 3rd edition before the tournament, and who clearly knew what he was doing. I resolved that I would try not to throw this game away. Try to focus and play tighter. Well, it was not a bad resolution...

One of the Lesser Obsidian Golem units went hard on the flank, with the Fiend lurking right behind them. I wasn't sure where to put the Halflings, so planted them in the corner where they could sit all game and hopefully contest or control that table segment. This was dumb, of course. I should have put them nearer the join of 2 segments, where they could shift about as needed. This occurred to me just after I declared they were sorted.

Cancon 2020 Aftermath - Part 5

This is a continuation of my report of the recent Clash of Kings Australia tournament at Cancon 2020. You can find the previous part here, or go right back to the start with the first part here.

Game 5 - Push
Angriartists - Goblins
  • Troll Horde
  • Troll Horde
  • Troll Horde
  • Troop of Mincer Mob
  • Troop of Mincer Mob
  • Troop of Mincer Mob
  • Troop of Mincer Mob
  • Troop of Mincer Mob
  • Troop of Mincer Mob
  • King on Chariot with Piercing Arrow
  • King with Jareth's Pendant (gives him a Headstrong aura)
  • Mincer
  • Mincer
  • War Trombone
OK, so... This list confused me a lot. I admit I had never really read up on what a Goblin Mincer did, and now I was paying the price. I stole my opponent's army list so that I could make sure I understood what I was up against during deployment. Aris explained the general concept of the list as the Mincers being the anvil, and the Trolls the hammer. That made sense. The Mincers are not quick, but they're Defence 6+ from the front. Of course, if they got a clean charge on you, you might know about that too...

What the hell am I looking at? I immediately had guilt about the pile of unpainted pump wagons at home.

Cancon 2020 Aftermath - Part 4

This is a continuation of my report of the recent Clash of Kings Australia tournament that was held as part of Cancon. You can find the previous part of the report here.

So we were onto Day 2 of the tournament, and after the savaging I had taken in Game 3, I was hoping I would be back into a realm of relative safety on the tables. But then I arrived at my table, and this is what I found...

What the hell? We didn't sign up for this!

Turns out the tanks belonged to the 40K player at the other table. Probably for the best, really...

Game 4 - Plunder
Daniel Harwood - Ogres
  • Horde of Ogre Warriors with Mead of Madness, Crocodog
  • Horde of Ogre Warriors with Brew of Haste, Crocodog
  • Horde of Ogre Warriors with Crocodog
  • Horde of Ogre Warriors with Crocodog
  • Horde of Ogre Warriors with Crocodog
  • Red Goblin Blaster
  • Red Goblin Blaster
  • Berserker Bully
  • Berserker Bully
  • Grokagamok
  • Ogre Warlock with Drain Life
  • Ogre Warlord on Chariot with Blade of Slashing
OK, that looks more like a Kings of War list. I admit I was concerned when I saw 2 Blasters in the list. I really had no ranged attacks or expendable elements with which to remove them. Then I discovered they don't blow up like they used to, and have to charge to hurt me. Well, that changes things...
So many Ogre Warriors. I mean, I get it. They're a solid unit. But I was glad none of them were Siegebreakers instead. One of those units had Mead of Madness and the Berserker Bully (character closest to the rock) came with Wild Charge. Otherwise that was a wall of Speed 6, so I had the upper hand in terms of dictating terms.

Cancon 2020 Aftermath - Part 3

This is a continuation of my report of the recent Clash of Kings Australia tournament that was held as part of Cancon. You can find the previous part of the report here.

Game 3 - Invade
Adam Storey - Undead
  • Horde of Revenants with Fire-Oil, Undead Giant Rats
  • Horde of Revenants with Brew of Strength, Undead Giant Rats
  • Horde of Wights with Mead of Madness
  • Horde of Wights with Brew of Sharpness
  • Horde of Zombie Trolls
  • Troop of Wraiths
  • Troop of Wraiths
  • Cursed Pharaoh with Wings of Honeymaze
  • Mhorgoth the Mandatory
  • Necromancer with Inspiring Talisman, Drain Life, Surge
I was a bit worried that I was heading for the wrong end of the tournament after 2 wins. I knew I was due for a correction. Well...

These things (the Zombie Trolls) were just gross. A lot of Adam's models are 3D printed, and he'd managed to complete these ones with bloody streaks as they dragged themselves across the ground... Eww. Anyway, they were hard on my left flank. Next to them were the Revenants, and behind them sat one of the Wight units.

Cancon 2020 Aftermath - Part 2

This is a continuation of my report of the recent Clash of Kings Australia tournament that was held as part of Cancon. You can find the previous part of the report here.

Game 2 - Raze
Brent Rabid - Dwarfs
  • Horde of Ironclad with Throwing Mastiff, Hammer of Measured Force
  • Regiment of Shieldbreakers with Throwing Mastiff
  • Regiment of Shieldbreakers with Throwing Mastiff
  • Horde of Earth Elementals
  • Horde of Earth Elementals
  • Regiment of Berserker Brock Riders with Brew of Sharpness
  • Regiment of Mastiff Hunting Pack
  • Dwarf Lord on Large Beast
  • Berserker Lord on Brock with Blade of the Beast Slayer
  • Steel Juggernaut
  • Steel Juggernaut
  • Stone Priest with Bane Chant
Brent's army was not what you normally expect to see in Dwarf force. No artillery. There was only a small amount of mobile shooting. And no Herneas. I'm so glad he's been retired off to a separate list...

Anyway, I liked Brent's list, but based on my own limited experience I was worried he would suffer for a lack of control over the engagements without much shooting or foot speed. I guess we would see...

That is a pretty compact deployment.

Cancon 2020 Aftermath - Part 1

So after all the fuss about raging bushfires, damaging hail and the various other signs of the apocalypse that have been this Australian summer, the trip to Cancon ended up going pretty smoothly. The weather was relatively mild (especially compared to last year, which basically had me trying to play game 3 curled up the fetal position), there was little to no smoke whilst we were up there, and the long drive was uneventful. Of course Canberra was on fire the day before we arrived, and again immediately after we left. It was good of the fires to pause so we could all attend a convention and play with toy soldiers...

I survived the tournament, and somehow took over 300 photos on my phone. I'm sure I'll be able to weed my way through them to keep these posts manageable, but it seems like one game per post will be the way to go.

I posted previously about my list, but here it is again for convenience:

League of Rhordia (2000 points)

  • Horde of Honour Guard with Indomitable Will
  • Horde of Honour Guard with Indomitable Will
  • Regiment of Knights
  • Regiment of Knights
  • Regiment of Knights
  • Regiment of Halfling Archers
  • Duke on Ancient Winged Aralez
  • Duke on Ancient Winged Aralez
  • Baron on Aralez
  • Mammoth
(I warn you now that the Dukes on Ancient Winged Aralez are likely to be referred to as "birbs" for much of the report, as that is how we were talking about them all weekend. I can't get it out of my head. I'm sorry...)

I didn't quite get everything finished before the tournament, but my efforts the night before the event ensured the halflings were at least not obviously incomplete. That was about the best that could be hoped for. Anyway, on with the report!

Game 1 - Smoke and Mirrors
Tim Stewart - Kingdoms of Men
  • Horde of Polearms with Indomitable Will
  • Horde of Polearms with Indomitable Will
  • Horde of Polearms with Indomitable Will
  • Regiment of Polearms
  • Troop of Knights
  • Mammoth
  • Mammoth
  • Giant
  • General on Winged Beast
  • General on Winged Beast
  • Army Standard Bearer with Lute of Insatiable Darkness
  • Hero on Pegasus with Indomitable Will
For once I know exactly what was in my opponent's list, because I printed it myself. And they're my models. Tim was in fact the only practice game I played with my army before the event, so it was a little funny to find ourselves matched up again in the first round.
Ah, this won't be confusing at all... Look how samey it all looks! You can see the hidden objective markers scattered all over the place. It's an interesting scenario. Each player only knows the value of the tokens that they placed on the other half of the field (they vary from 2 down to dummies with 0), and each player reveals one at the end of each turn.

Convic 2019 Aftermath - Part 7

This is the final part of my tournament report of Convic. You can find the previous part here. You can find the first part here.

One game to go, and I was still leading the field with AG nipping at my heels. I guess that made it my tournament to lose...

Game 7: Push
Geoff Holland - Dwarfs
  • Golloch's Thunder (formation)
  • Golloch's Fury (Legendary Steel Behemoth)
  • Steel Behemoth
  • Steel Behemoth
  • Earth Elemental Horde
  • Earth Elemental Horde
  • Greater Earth Elemental
  • Berserker Brock Rider Regiment
  • Sharpshooter Troop
  • Ranger Regiment
  • Berserker Lord on Brock
  • Stone Priest with Martyr's Prayer
That's about 50 points short, so I've missed something again. But the important stuff is there, right? 3 Steel Behemoths, and a total of 6 units with Defence 6! It was a wall of steel and stone. I had seen this army sitting on a table and the thought of facing it had worried me a bit. Now we would get to see if those concerns were warranted.

At the start of the game we had to select a single enemy unit to be worth double attrition points. I chose the Brock Riders, and Geoff picked the Winged Beast over on my right.

I was on the same table as before, and Geoff put me on the same side as well. And I was playing Dwarfs again. So there was an element of deja vu here. But Geoff's list was very different from John's, and seemed a whole lot more likely to be pushing at me. He also stacked a lot of weight on my left flank.

Convic 2019 Aftermath - Part 6

This is a continuation of my tournament report of Convic. You can find the previous part here.

So I had finally lost a game, but with 2 games to go I was still a single point ahead of AG at the top of the field. I could yet emerge victorious overall!

Game 6: Control (2250pts)
John Healy - Dwarfs

  • Ironclad Horde with Aegis of the Elohi
  • Ironguard Regiment
  • Ironguard Regiment
  • Earth Elemental Horde
  • Greater Earth Elemental
  • Berserker Brock Rider Regiment with Brew of Strength
  • Herneas
  • Herneas' Ranger Regiment
  • Rordin the Dwarf
  • Ironbelcher Organ Gun
  • Ironbelcher Organ Gun
  • Flame Belcher
  • Stone Priest (I presume he had Bane-chant)
  • Battle Driller
  • Battle Driller
  • Mastiff Hunting Pack
  • Mastiff Hunting Pack
I think that's about right, but once again I've missed about 35 points of items somewhere.

John had a lot of deployments, so I couldn't really control what would end up facing the Organ Guns (which scare me). I had a relatively token force on the right of the building, which was effectively dividing more forces.

Convic 2019 Aftermath - Part 5

This is a continuation of my tournament report of Convic. You can find the previous part here.

At the start of the second day, I was somehow undefeated after 4 games. However, I now finally ran into AG, who I don't believe I have ever beaten at Kings of War. Perhaps my reign of terror was finally at an end...

We were up to the largest army size for the remaining 3 games. My list didn't change a whole lot from the previous one; I added another Beast of War and a couple of magic items on my Winged Beasts.

Game 5: Kill (2250pts)
Andrew Goodman - Abyssal Dwarfs
  • Abyssal Grotesque Horde with Potion of the Caterpillar
  • Abyssal Grotesque Horde
  • Abyssal Grotesque Horde
  • Gargoyle Troop
  • Gargoyle Troop
  • Gargoyle Troop
  • Ba'su'su the Vile
  • Dravak Dalken
  • Infernok
  • Greater Obsidian Golem
  • Abyssal Grotesque Champion with Inspiring Talisman
  • Angkor Heavy Mortar
  • Angkor Heavy Mortar
  • Angkor Heavy Mortar
For once I think I might have the list exactly right. Helps when there are so few items. Ba'su'su again... I do dislike him.

AG's deployment was pretty compact. An advantage he would have in this game was that he had fewer unwieldy units. I had plenty of compact elements in my many many monsters, but the size of the Pole-arm hordes makes it harder to concentrate force where you need it.

Convic 2019 Aftermath - Part 4

This is a continuation of my tournament report of Convic. You can find the previous part here.

3 wins in 3 games. You wouldn't dare dream of it. I had come unstuck against Matt before however, so maybe my run of glory was at an end.

Game 4: Dominate (1995pts)
Matt Sellick - Elves
  • Archer Horde with Heart-seeking Chant
  • Therennian Sea Guard Horde with Brew of Sharpness
  • Drakon Rider Horde with Chant of Hate
  • Awoken Guardians
  • Tree Herder with Healing Brew, Blizzard
  • Tree Herder with Blood Boil
  • Green Lady with Sabre-Toothed Pussycat
  • Elven Prince on Horse with Sabre-Toothed Pussycat
Dominate. Nice and simple. It couldn't be too hard to move a pair of Tree Herders off the centre, right?

Matt's army actually looked pretty small. Sure, there was some good stuff there, but that's a pretty compact deployment.

Convic 2019 Aftermath - Part 3

This is a continuation of my tournament report of Convic. You can find the previous part here.

Somehow I was undefeated after 2 games, and it was now time to shift to our larger 1995 point army lists. This was the point where I kind of wished I wasn't packing away my Arquebusiers, but I was pulling a lot of monsters out of the box instead. So it was a matter of give-and-take.

Game 3: Ransack (1995pts)
Huw Evans - Ratkin
  • Warrior Horde
  • Warrior Regiment
  • Warrior Regiment
  • Enforcer on Fleabag with Diadem of Dragon-kind
  • Lab Rats (Formation)
  • Horde of Blight with Brew of Strength
  • Horde of Shock Troops of Potion of the Caterpillar (I think)
  • Troop of Clawshots
  • Troop of Hackpaws
  • Horde of Tunnel Runners
  • Death Engine with Bloody Carnage
  • Warlock with Critter's Call, Bane-chant, Amulet of the Fire-heart (I think...)
  • Night Terror with Inspiring Talisman
  • Swarm-crier
Again, this falls well short of the 1995 point limit. I've missed a few things. I'm so good at this. Hey, I've never fought Ratkin before, OK? This is all new to me.

Actually, I think I missed a character. Maybe a War Chief with 2 hand weapons? Could be a thing.

Ransack meant we scattered a number of control counters all around the field. The central (light grey) point was worth 3 points instead of 1, and the orange ones (both of which were slightly to my right) were worth 2. The dark green were just worth 1 each.

Huw stacked most of his speed over here, on my left flank. The Rat Ogre dude is the Night Terror (apparently the dude on top is his Inspiring Talisman). The wheels are the Tunnel Runners. The Lab Rats formation meant all the regular Warrior units (the 2 regiments you see here and the horde up the other end) all had Regeneration.

Convic 2019 Aftermath - Part 2

This is a continuation of my tournament report of Convic. You can find the previous part here.

So I had narrowly escaped with a win in the first game. This was an unusually positive start for a KoW tournament by my standards. Probably meant I was heading for a fall...

Game 2: Loot (1495pts)
Yan Lai - Empire of Dust
  • Revenant Horde
  • Mummy Regiment
  • Mummy Regiment
  • Revenant Chariot Regiment
  • Revenant Chariot Regiment
  • Scavenger Regiment
  • Scorpion Husk
  • Bone Giant
  • Cursed High Priest on Mount with Blizzard
  • Revenant Champion on Mount
I really should take a photo of people's army lists before each game. I can never remember the details in terms of items. I'm missing 35 points here somewhere.
EDIT: Thanks to Yan's feedback we now know the Revenant Horde had Brew of Strength and the Revenant Champion had the Blade of Slashing. Thanks Yan!

During setup we established that the last time I had played Yan was at Axemaster. It was Warhammer 7th edition. So probably over 10 years ago. The people you run into...

There were more loot tokens over on the right, so I naturally loaded that flank a bit more. I might have underdone it on the left, really. Oh well, can't be everywhere. 2 tokens is enough for a win.

Convic 2019 Aftermath - Part 1

So after more or less being in a state of hobby hibernation since Cancon, over the weekend I awoke from my slumber to attend Convic. Convic is one of the few 2-day tournaments left on the calendar, and I've been attending it nearly every year since it began as a Warhammer Fantasy tournament something like 15 years ago. The local Kings of War scene seems to struggle with multi-day events at present (with the notable exception of Cancon), and thanks to a number of factors, this year only saw a dozen or so players attend. This led to a very relaxed, community-style atmosphere that was really rather nice. It meant that with 7 games to play, you were more likely to play a given person than not, which was really rather funny - almost like a round-robin.

I had a bit of trouble coming up with lists for the event. I say "lists", plural, because Convic has an unusual format of 3 different sized armies - the games grow as you go along. This year the game sizes were 1495, 1995 and 2250 points. The multiple list format was not really what troubled me - I was just struggling to work out what army I wanted to use. I was mostly trying to stay away from armies I've used in previous events, in particular Ogres (which I have used twice at previous Convics). Whilst that still left me with a few options, the most likely were Dwarfs or Kingdoms of Men.

I'm still hesitant to use Dwarfs when I haven't gotten around to painting any Brock Riders, and a few of my units are under-sized which limits my options. On the other hand, friends were a little scathing of how bland KoM are, and it's hard to justify using them when you can field much the same stuff in League of Rhordia, but with more toys. But I have used Rhordia a couple of times, and really wanted to make a KoM list that would be worth running. I toyed briefly with nonsense like massed infantry flooding the field, but in the end the thing that caught my attention was the Beast of War. It had very solid stats, could add some moderate shooting in the form of a ballista on its back, and was something Rhordia didn't have access to. I decided to field plenty of Beasts of War, and went from there.

These were my lists:

1495
  • Pole-Arms Block Horde
  • Pole-Arms Block Horde
  • Pole-Arms Block Regiment
  • Pole-Arms Block Regiment
  • Arquebusier Horde with Jar of the Four Winds
  • General on Winged Beast with Blade of Slashing
  • Wizard on Horse with Lightning Bolt, Bane-Chant and the Inspiring Talisman
  • Beast of War with light ballista
  • Giant
1995
  • Pole-Arms Block Horde
  • Pole-Arms Block Horde
  • Pole-Arms Block Horde
  • Pole-Arms Block Regiment
  • Pole-Arms Block Regiment
  • General on Winged Beast
  • General on Winged Beast
  • Wizard on Horse with Lightning Bolt, Bane-Chant and the Inspiring Talisman
  • Beast of War with light ballista
  • Beast of War with light ballista
  • Giant
  • Giant
2250
  • Pole-Arms Block Horde
  • Pole-Arms Block Horde
  • Pole-Arms Block Horde
  • Pole-Arms Block Regiment
  • Pole-Arms Block Regiment
  • General on Winged Beast with Blade of Slashing
  • General on Winged Beast with Diadem of Dragon-Kind
  • Wizard on Horse with Lightning Bolt, Bane-Chant and the Inspiring Talisman
  • Beast of War with light ballista
  • Beast of War with light ballista
  • Beast of War with light ballista
  • Giant
  • Giant
No, the lists are not very imaginative. And it's slightly bizarre having more effective shooting in my 1495 list than the 2250 one. As soon as I was putting the Arquebusiers back into the box, I was wondering if I had done the right thing. Ah well, at least I had monsters!

I took plenty of photos during the event, although the first 3 games were a big of a juggling act given I was also using my phone as a chess timer. Hopefully the pictures will help tell the story.

Game 1: Invade (1495pts)
Tim Stewart - Orcs

  • Ax Horde
  • Ax Horde
  • Morax Regiment
  • Gore Rider Regiment
  • Krudger on Ancient Winged Slasher
  • Godspeaker on Gore with Bane-Chant, Inspiring Talisman
  • Giant
  • War Drum

Tim and I arranged a grudge match at the very last minute, because he hasn't played many games of KoW. He was still feeling a little shaky on the rules and was concerned he would instinctively revert to things like Warhammer movement. We decided playing the first game against someone who could watch for it and remind him might be helpful. As it happened, it really didn't come up. He seemed to have his head around things pretty well.

The tables were smaller for the smaller games (4 feet wide at 1495, 5 feet at 1995 and the full 6 feet for 2250). This meant even at the smaller size, the field looked pretty full.

Cancon 2019 Aftermath - Part 6

This is the final part of my report of Cancon 2019. You can find the previous part here. You can find the start here.

Game 6 - Control
Matt Curtis - Elves
  • Horde of Kindred Archers with Heart-seeking Chant
  • Horde of Therennian Sea Guard
  • Regiment of Palace Guard
  • Horde of Forest Shamblers
  • Horde of Drakon Riders
  • Horde of Drakon Riders
  • Dragon Kindred Lord
  • Mage with Bane Chant
  • Army Standard Bearer with Lute of Insatiable Darkness
  • Noble War Chariot
  • Noble War Chariot
So I had made it to the final round, and I was perilously close to mid-field after my dramatic improvement on Day 2. I had actually been musing with someone prior to this game that I really hadn't run into any shooting all tournament. I would normally have been pleased about that (I really don't like gun lines), but it occurred to me that my list would probably cause a gun line nightmares. Matt's army was certainly not a gun line, however it had significantly more firepower than any of my other opponents. I guess this was my chance to see how my list held up against someone that actually shot at me a bit.

A Dragon on the flank, with the Forest Shamblers shooting forward with their vanguard move so they could stand in the forest and pretend to be trees.

Cancon 2019 Aftermath - Part 5

This the continuation of my report of the Cancon 2019 tournament. You can find the previous part here.

Game 5 - Ransack
Darren Holmes - Forces of the Abyss
  • Archfiend of the Abyss with Wings
  • Ba'su'su
  • Mau'ti-bu-su
  • Succubi Regiment
  • Succubi Regiment
  • Regiment of Abyssal Horsemen
  • Regiment of Abyssal Horsemen
  • Horde of Twisted Victims
  • Horde of Molochs
  • Troop of Gargoyles
  • Abyssal Harbinger on mount
  • Abyssal Harbinger on mount (this second one might have been someone else)
That doesn't total anywhere near enough points. No doubt there was a Caterpillar Potion on one of the cavalry units and a variety of other items scattered around there.

There are a lot of objective markers in this scenario, worth varying amounts. They were scattered all over the shop, including 2 that Darren put in opposite corners of the field. I didn't think all that carefully about these rocks in front of me. They were Height 4 and impassable. So apart from the flyer, I was going to have real trouble crossing over those, and no way to see. I had rather carelessly isolated the Order of the Abyssal Hunt during deployment. It might not have been that big a deal, but Darren put a lot of flyers across the field from them.

Cancon 2019 Aftermath - Part 4

This is the continuation of my tournament report from Cancon 2019. You can find the previous part here. You can find the first part here.

Game 4 - Raze
Kate Price - Basileans
Holy Lancers (Formation) (I think) (more brackets)
  • High Paladin on Elder Dragon
  • High Paladin on Griffon
  • Horde of Ogre Palace Guard
  • Horde of Elohi
  • Horde of Elohi
  • Gnaeus Sallustis
  • Regiment of Paladin Knights with Potion of the Caterpillar
  • Regiment of Paladin Knights
  • Troop of Sisterhood Panther Lancers
  • Heavy Arbalest
I had made it to day 2. The weather had improved a bit, and I was somewhat recovered. The same could not be said of my score in the tournament, however. Of a possible 63 points I had accumulated the princely total of 7. Clearly I was poised to strike. I had one hand on the wooden spoon already!

I have never played the Raze scenario before. I'll be honest, I liked it on paper. Although getting the first turn seemed important if someone had enough fast stuff to pounce on the objectives across the table.

The terrain on my right flank was pretty open, which boded well for large units of cavalry. Kate put her Griffon, Gnaeus, and her Paladin Knight regiments over there to keep the Arbalest company.

Cancon 2019 Aftermath - Part 3

This is the third part of my tournament report from Cancon 2019. You can find the previous part here.

Game 3 - Dominate
Spoon - Forces of the Abyss
Fire Legion (Formation)
  • Archfiend of the Abyss with Wings, Lightning
  • Mau'ti-bu-su
  • Horde of Abyssal Despoilers
  • Horde of Tortured Souls
  • Regiment of Abyssal Horsemen (probably with Potion of the Caterpillar)
  • Abyssal Temptress (may have had Wings and Banechant)
  • Regiment of Succubi
  • Regiment of Succubi
  • Troop of Succubi
  • Troop of Succubi
  • Troop of Gargoyles
  • Efreet with Heart-Seeking Chant
Apologies for how much I'm struggling to get these lists accurate. The further out we get from the event, the harder it is to remember. Honestly this whole game is a bit of a haze for me. It was 40 degrees and the humidity was to the point where I felt like I was in danger of dripping sweat onto the table. Guzzling water will only get you so far. I was really struggling; I didn't really want to be trying to focus on a game at this point. But hey, I survived. So that's something, eh?

Well that's a blurry photo. Anyway, I set up with the intention of using that impassable terrain behind the forest as something of an anchor for my flank. The speed and threat range of the cavalry and Tortured Souls on that flank worried me, so I wanted to see if I could keep them out of the game for a while.

Cancon 2019 Aftermath - Part 2

This is the second part of my tournament report from Cancon 2019. You can find the first part here.

Right, so after an ignominious start, I figured I could probably do better in future rounds. Couldn't go much worse, right? And now I'd had practice and stuff. On to glory!

Honestly, that comes to about 85 points short. I don't remember what else was in there. Must have been some items, because I think the models are all accounted for. I'm so good at this...

Cancon 2019 Aftermath - Part 1

Right, it's now been over a week since Cancon, and I've still not had a chance to write up any of my games. I had planned to just do 2 posts - 1 for each day. But given how long this has taken and before the situation gets any worse, here is game 1...

I have written previously about my army list, which was thrown together with the intention of being as simple as possible in order to accommodate my lack of practice and expected difficult weather conditions. I had modest expectations, so let's see how that panned out. Here is my list again in case you can't be bothered going back to the other post...

  • Exemplar Forsaker with Blade of Slashing
  • Exemplar Forsaker
  • Horde of Order of the Brotherhood with Maccwar's Caterpillar Potion
  • Horde of Order of the Brotherhood
  • Horde of Order of the Brotherhood
  • Regiment of the Order of the Abyssal Hunt
  • Regiment of the Order of Redemption
  • Forsaken Beast with Regeneration
  • Forsaken Beast with Regeneration

On with the report!

Game 1 - Push
Trevor Younghusband - Basileans
  • Formation - Retribution of the Heavens
  • Formation - Holy Lancers
  • Horde of Elohi (with Caterpillar)
  • Horde of Elohi
  • Ur-Elohi
  • Ur-Elohi
  • Gnaeus Sallustis
  • Regiment of Paladin Knights
  • Regiment of Paladin Knights
  • Regiment of Paladin Foot Guard
  • Regiment of Paladin Foot Guard
  • Horde of Sisterhood Infantry
That stuff doesn't total 2250 points. I've obviously missed a couple of items. There may even have been a Bearer of the Holy Icon waving the Lute of Insatiable Darkness around.

This was my first game using my army list. In fact, it was the first time I had ever used Brotherhood. Obviously the first round was always going to be a challenge.

The terrain didn't help me. There's a rocky obstacle in front of the knights over on the right. I needed some time to get some clear charges.
