Doggies and Rumble Lists

Rumble in the Bronx is now less than 2 weeks away, and I still have a fair bit of work to do in order to get my army ready. I've been a bit slack over the last week or so, but last night I sat down for a couple of hours and knocked out some more "Sabretusks" (I'm using Fenrisian Wolf models from 40K, because they fit the theme of my army better).

These guys are pretty rough, partly because I'm lazy and in a hurry (a dire combination), but also partly because I find these white furry models difficult to paint cleanly. They'll look OK on the table, but the camera is rather unforgiving. It was only when I was uploading these photos that I noticed how pronounced some of the joins are, even after painting. I will have to go back and address this. It's pretty unsightly, even by my lowly standards. Fortunately I bought some more liquid green stuff recently (my previous pot dried up after almost no use, much to my disgust).
5 painted Subretusks, using Fenrisian Wolves. Try to ignore the nasty join lines on the models. I'll address that.
The weird scaly/matted fur on the backs of the models still feels strange to me when I'm trying to paint it.
A couple of the models scored resin bases to break the unit up a bit.
This guy in particular scored a resin base to give him a bit of a boost and make him more imposing. Sabretusks are pretty buff, after all.
Doggy number 4...
And the last one. I do like how dynamic some of these guys are. They're certainly a big step up from the old Goblin Wolves.
I already had one painted up from Empire in Flames last year, so I've now got 6 in total. Should be enough for most games (it's more than I need for Rumble, anyway). I think I have a couple more unassembled somewhere. They will presumably catch up later.
In other news, I had to submit my list a few days ago, so I am now locked in. This is what I have entered:

Ogre Kingdoms: 2000 points

  • Tyrant
    • General; Great Weapon; Heavy Armour
    • Arabyan Carpet (He can FLY!!)
    • Talisman of Preservation
    • Enchanted Shield

    • Great Weapon; Battle Standard
    • Armour of Fortune
  • Firebelly
    • Magic Level 1; Lore of Fire

    • Great Weapon; Light Armour; Great Throwing Spear
    • Longstrider
  • 6 Ironguts
    • Great Weapon; Heavy Armour; Standard; Musician; Gutlord
  • 6 Ogres
    • Iron Fist; Light Armour; Standard; Musician; Crusher
  • 3 Mournfang Cavalry
    • Great Weapon; Heavy Armour; Standard; Musician
    • Gleaming Pendant
  • 4 Sabretusk Pack
  • 4 Leadbelchers
    • Light Armour; Musician
  • Ironblaster

Models in Army: 28
Total Army Cost: 1999pts

My gut feel is that the army will be about mid-field in terms of strength. I have seen some outrageous lists being posted on WargamerAU, so I at least know mine will not be the worst army out there. The flying Tyrant was in response to an open challenge issued by that old egg Chris Cousens, to try to encourage everyone to include a character on the Arabyan Carpet. Given I don't like the concept of Ogre Gutstars anyway, I didn't take much convincing. My army is largely bereft of magic, but this was just because I couldn't fit everything I wanted at 2000 points. At least I have a Hunter leading a pack of doggies. That makes me happy.

So at this point I just need to finish converting the Ironblaster and paint it. Oh, and work out what I'm going to do about all 4 characters. I do have proper Ogre model backups for most of them, which is why they've been left until last. But I'd rather make some more unique things to lead this force. Time will tell...

  1. The wolves look cool, I'm sure the little imperfections won't stand out a bit on the battlefield. Good luck with the tournament!

    1. Cheers. Right now the lines fall into the category of "if I have time, I'll fix it".

    1. Just doing my usual thing of keeping things simple where I can. These wolves will do the job, but they are not exactly masterpieces.

  3. Eyeing off the fenresians for my VC army as well, they are rather dynamic and serve the forces of fantasy a lot more than the forces of Sci-Fi. Had same problem with liquid green stuff, hmmph!

    1. The greatest frustration was that when liquid green stuff dries up, it doesn't turn into normal green stuff. The least it could do is turn from one useful product into another...

  4. Looks nice, what colors did you use for basing?

    1. Cheers. I start with a black undercoat, give it a heavy drybrush of Vermin Brow, then a lighter highlight of Desert Yellow. Any rocks get painted with a solid coat of a pre-made mix I've got of black and Shadow Grey, before being highlighted with straight Shadow Grey. Old school paint colours, I'm afraid...
