I'm still here... somewhere

I can't believe it's been almost a month since my last post. That's pretty bad.

Much of my absence has been spent trying to absorb all that's been happening to the Warhammer world. I read my way through End Times: Archaon, and then through the final two Gotrek and Felix novels, Kinslayer and Slayer. I think I more or less knew what I was going to find, but I wanted to go through it all for myself rather than getting it all second-hand. It's all a bit depressing, but I'm still waiting for 9th edition to land before I commit to any long-term plans.

I was also working on Thorgrim, as I said I was going to in my last post. I thought I had basically finished him about a week ago, but then realised I hadn't dealt with the back banners on the throne. This has stalled me an annoying amount. I never had the banner poles so I decided to make some from brass rod, empire banners and a couple of cannon balls for pole caps (I couldn't find any suitable Dwarf-themed caps that fit the fat rods I used).
He's not so much WIP as almost finished.

Another angle.
Holes for the banner poles on the back of the throne, enlarged a bit to fit my preposterously fat poles (yeah, compensating for things right?)
Really, really WIP. Or experimental. Or something.
I decided to paint them up more or less like the originals, but as soon as I looked at them properly I started to regret it. Oh yeah, I finally found a decent photo online of the original model too.
Not sure I even like the bottom one. I think the detail will change. And they'll both be simplified, I think.
I don't tend to do detailed banners, let alone ones based on existing designs. At the moment I intend to muddle through, but it could take a long time and I may snap along the way. Time will tell. Maybe I'll get him done before 9th edition arrives. Maybe.

  1. That paintjob and model bring back a lot of memories. To be honest I feel the same way about the current Fantasy climate as well, stuck in some kind of limbo. I am rather attached to the Old World and the denizens within, so although I really liked the return of Nagash and such, its was the other stuff that kinda had me down.

I have pretty much abandoned Fantasy until the new edition comes out. Simply now just exploring 40k and 30k again after so many blissful fun years of 8th Ed Fantasy.

Your model does however make me want to paint my old Thorgrim, who is currently sitting on his throne on my lead pile. One day Thorgrim, one day...

    1. I would suggest painting him sooner rather than later, given he's likely to become a relic of the past.

    2. I may very well do at that. Can I ask what base size you put your Thorgrim on? Looks like its large enough to accommodate every throne bearer.

    3. After digging around on the internet for a while, I eventually established that the current model comes with a 40x60mm base. So I went with that to be consistent with the rules. I just glued a monster base to 2 infantry bases and green stuffed up the gaps.

To be honest, saying the model "fits" is a little generous. There's plenty of room length-wise, but the bearers are all hanging a bit off with one of their feet. It works, but it's a tight squeeze.

    4. Fantastic, as I believe I have some of those bases (somewhere...). Even though the throne bearers are overhanging a little, its not that much to really be noticeable. Can I ask how does it fare ranking up?

    5. I just tried it. The model ranks up OK except for the rear right bearer (the one with the hammer down at his side). That hammer really gets in the way. It would need some creative shuffling to rank up properly, or even a model that is somehow based specifically to fit next to it. His weapon is pretty much occupying the space over the centre of the base beside him. It's not ideal.

  2. My nerd rage has lowered slightly in the weeks since the archaon drop.

However, it is still pretty high at the best of times given GWs half arsed acknowledgement of the mighty chaos dwarfs lol they are a real army!

Great to have you back blogging and the thorgrim looks awesome too

    1. Attaching oneself to Chaos Dwarfs seems a path to disappointment and bitterness. I would imagine that is why they are so grumpy themselves. :(

    1. Do it, he's way cooler than the newer version. Which nobody seems to have anyway.

  4. Great old-school paint job. I recently painted Thorgrim myself (sadly without the throne) and there's a lot of character in that doughty frame.

Glad to see your blog back, don't let the End Times grind you down.
