Another wave of reinforcements

My Orcs and Goblins are getting a lot of love at the moment. Actually it's mainly the goblins, but that's OK. They needed more work to begin with. Recently I posted about my incredible good fortune in having a pile of very presentable greenskins practically land in my lap, and now we have this stuff. Actually, this stuff was ordered before the second-hand stuff had entered the picture. So I bought this before that, but there was travel time in involved, so... the arrival of this stuff is the latest development.

I present to you the first models I have ever bought with Age of Sigmar on the packaging...

3 boxes of Squig Herds, 2 of Squig Hoppers, 2 of "Troggoths" (trolls), a big fat Troll to use as a themed giant, and something called Mollog's Mob.
Yes, I know. Age of Sigmar products. I feel dirty. But I am not using them for Age of Sigmar, so that makes it acceptable. I put together a couple of sets immediately, and I am away on holiday at present but I brought most of the remainder with me in the hope of getting some assembly done.

That's the big "Dankhold Troggoth" giant, the leader troll from Mollog's Mob (might even be Mollog himself - I didn't read the blurb), and a flying squig overhead.

A few things I feel I need to talk about here. First, I doubt I would ever have bought these models if I hadn't found an opportunity to purchase them from the UK and have them delivered to me. I bought them at the regular price offered by Wayland, and it was literally half the price that GW charge here in Australia. We in Australia have always been treated pretty badly by GW's translation of exchange rates (and in more recent times, their international trade embargo nonsense), but when you couple it with what their new models tend to cost, the difference is truly eye-watering.

Most of the models that have come out since Age of Sigmar launched have been of little interest to me. The few exceptions were a couple of "Sylvaneth" Wood Elf models, and now these guys. There have been whole ranges of models like the newer Dwarfs and Sigmarines (I can't even remember what they're properly called right now, thus revealing my inner thought processes around them) that have left me completely cold.

I also really, really struggle with the new names of stuff, as revealed above. I feel like I spit the words out when I say things like "Ogor" or "Troggoth", so I'm just going to cut the crap. I will talk about things as what they are to me - squigs, trolls, goblins, and the rest.

Anyway, I really wanted some of the squigs when I saw the models, and once the price became palatable I jumped at them. I also liked the trolls, as they're quite reminiscent of the old stone trolls (albeit about twice the size). I figured I could work with them. Squigs and trolls are some of the real teeth to a goblin force, they're something I've always been a bit short on, and they are compatible with Kings of War. So it all made sense.

Assembling some of this stuff has helped highlight some basing shortages for me. Of course, they all only ship with round bases now. I managed to give some of them away, and perhaps I shall have a ritual burning of the rest later. Only joking. Well, I might be joking. Anyway, I noticed I didn't have a lot of 40mm bases for the trolls, in particular. The situation has not been helped by all my custom built ogres over the years - they ate up my reserves. So I jumped on ebay and ordered 100 more. Should keep me going for a bit, when they arrive. Hopefully I don't end up having to buy 20mm ones as well.

I feel I have momentum with my goblins at the moment, and I'm trying to use that. This should also feed into our plans for an all-goblin campaign in the very near future. More toys for the lads!

  1. My gaming buddies and I all play 'underworlds' and even we don't use the new names for stuff. An orc is an orc is an orc!!

Glad to see your mojo fired up again.

    1. Yeah I do wonder how many people who have used the normal names for so many years will ever be able to mentally switch. There would always be some translation required.

  2. Looks like a great haul! What's the size difference between the old stone trolls and the plastic ones? What about the Mollog troll?

    1. I don't have all of them with me. When I'm back home I might work on a side-by-side of all 3 in my next post.

  3. You can't ritually burn the round bases - you gave most of them to me for 40K, the only true use of round bases. I was rummaging around earlier today looking for something completely unrelated and found a stash of square bases. Hopefully some are of the right size and thus I may pay for the round bases you gave me with the squarest of bases.

  4. The squig and troll models are great and fully meant for 8th ed. I also picked up what they call Kurthoth Hunter but we all know are actually modern rereleases of Treekin.
Glad to see some of the up companies are shipping to Aus (I thought they were strongly discouraged from that). I’ve been buying stuff and shipping it to a mate in Tasmania as it works out cheaper even with postage etc.

    1. I was actually considering Kurnoth Hunters. Probably the most tempting thing I didn't buy. But I don't know when I'd get around to them, so I figure I might be a little sensible and wait for next time.

And no, nobody is shipping to Australia. My wife was flying back from the UK and brought these with her. I'm afraid we're still stuck with GW's isolationist policies.

  5. I really feel you mate with the old names of the models compared to the new ones. Aeldari, Ogor, Orruk and all this sh*t. I am not at all interested in Age of Sigmar, but some of the models are really nice and can still be used in Warhammer Fantasy or 9th Age. I personally found some nice Models for my
warriors of chaos which go nicely on sqaure bases.

Lord of Blight as Nurgel Chaoslord
