The Battle of Vanhaldenschlosse: Introduction

And now for something a little different.

In honour of the new The Grim & The Grave expansion for Total War: Warhammer, we were invited to organise one of our traditional battle reports based around the characters being added to the game. We will then go back and try to recreate the battle in Total War, and see how that plays out.

Warhammer 8th Edition Scenario: Ambush!

Another scenario that was hurriedly laid out on the day, and which was used for Game 2 of the campaign between Warriors of Chaos and Vampire Counts.

Ambush!

The attacker seeks to use the element of surprise to compensate for the enemy’s superior numbers.

The Battlefield
Terrain can be set up however you like. In our case the setting was a swamp, so the table was scattered with swamp-like terrain.

Armies
This battle uses uneven army values. The Defender’s army should be 1.5x the value of the Attacker’s army. For example, if the Attacker has 2000 points, the Defender should have 3000 points.

Warhammer 8th Edition Scenario: Foothold

As we go along in the campaign, there will doubtless be plenty of new scenarios laid out for the players to contend with. Everyone seems ready for a fresh and interesting challenge. Not all of the scenarios will necessarily be even. But both sides will always be in with a chance.

Here we have the scenario that was used for the first battle between Empire and Warriors of Chaos.

Foothold

An attacking force is attempting to gain a foothold in enemy territory, whilst the defender is trying to force them back.

The Battlefield
Terrain can be set up however you like. In our case we left one end of the table fairly bare as it represented the grassland just above the sandy beaches.

Armies
The Attacker and Defender both choose armies of an equal points value.

Deployment
The battle is played lengthwise down a 6’x4’ table. Armies can be deployed anywhere within 24” of the short table edge, which puts them up to 24” apart.

Once the table has been set up, the entire Defending army is deployed. Then the entire Attacking army is deployed.

The Field of Shattered Dreams

This is a scenario intended for use in large (multi-player) games of Warhammer Fantasy 8th edition.

The intent is to allow 2 teams of players to fight an objective-based scenario, but where there is more point to controlling the objectives before the end of the game and where it is easier for players to take a direct hand in each other's area of the field (rather than pretty much playing 3 separate games alongside each other, as can happen in a game like this).

The Field of Shattered Dreams

Deep within the borders of the Empire, a coven of Chaos sorcerers performed a ritual to open a rift into the Realm of Chaos. This rift was intended to allow a flood of daemons to enter the mortal plane and cause havoc within the heart of the Empire whilst an army of mortal Chaos worshippers advanced under the cover of the confusion that followed.

Well that was the plan, anyway. Unbeknownst to the sorcerers, their actions had drawn the attention of the Colleges of Magic in Altdorf. A response was hastily arranged, and at the height of the ritual the Empire wizards struck. The spell could not be entirely stopped, but the outside interference caused the rift to fragment, shattering into several smaller parts. These smaller rifts lacked the direction of the original spell, and as such they fell dormant, waiting for someone to seize control.

A mad scramble ensued as the mortal Chaos invasion force rushed to claim control of the rifts, whilst the Empire response force held what they could and waited desperately for aid.

The Battle of Heffengen: scenario rules

This scenario is designed to recreate the Battle of Heffengen in its entirety. It serves as an amalgamation of the following scenarios from the End Times: Nagash source book: Heffengen: River of Undeath; Heffengen: Fire and Iron; and Heffengen: Gurug’ath’s Doom. Some of the rules have been modified to suit the game as a whole, and certain additions have been made in order to better represent the flow of the battle in the background account.

The rules presented here are intended for 6-8 players divided into 2 teams, and a total points value of between 30,000-40,000 points per side.
