Cancon 2024 Aftermath - Part 1

The Old World is upon us, although in some parts of the world we can't yet get our hands on the books. Nevertheless the local community is abuzz with the new rules and what the game is going to be like. This the was the rather strange backdrop for what may yet be my last ever 6th edition Warhammer fantasy tournament. Of course, I probably thought that 18 years ago when 7th edition arrived. Time moves in mysterious ways...

I initially submitted a Drycha list that included 2 Treemen. That's tough, but without a BSB to help them hold their ground, and a list with not a lot of other options, I had assumed it would be OK. The organisers disagreed however, and asked me to remove one of them. So then I found myself with a list containing more Treekin and Wild Riders than I expected. I was rather concerned about how it might hold up, given a lack of real spine. Dryads are very solid, but with no ranks or real bulk, the Dryads were meant to be my staying power. Oh well, trees are trees, right?

  • Drycha (Level 2, Lore of Athel Loren)
  • Glamourweave Spellsinger (Level 2, Lore of Athel Loren) on Elf Steed with Dispel Scroll
  • 12 Dryads with Branch Nymph
  • 12 Dryads with Branch Nymph
  • 8 Dryads
  • 8 Dryads
  • 3 Treekin
  • 3 Treekin
  • 5 Wild Riders with Musician, Standard
  • 5 Wild Riders with Musician, Standard
  • Treeman
Full disclosure, I actually won Cancon maybe 19 years ago with a list a bit like this one - a Treeman Ancient instead of Drycha, no Wild Riders and even more Dryads. The army book was new and I was excited to finally be able to make an all-tree army. I didn't realise quite how tough the list would prove to be. I then won another tournament a few months later, which proved it was no fluke. I decided the army was clearly easy mode and retired it from events for a number of years. I went back to losing with things like Ogres and Orcs. As a result of all this, I knew the army would perform OK this time around. The list is a bit different with Drycha at the helm, but an army that's entirely immune to psychology was always a leg up in 6th edition - there's just so much less that can go wrong.

On the path to Uprising

This coming weekend, I am heading to Ballarat for a one-day 6th edition tournament called Uprising. Seems like about 40 players will be attending, which is a good number and about all they could fit anyway. I toyed with the idea of taking High Elves and using it as motivation to try to get some more silver helms painted, but in the end I decided to take Cult of Slaanesh instead.

Cult of Slaanesh is a variant Dark Elf list from the Storm of Chaos campaign book, and uses certain Dark Elves blended with a selection of Mortal Chaos and Daemon choices (all with a Slaaneshi flavour). It was a pretty exciting list when it first appeared, and I think a lot of us considered trying to make an army without actually managing to make it happen. Well, this is my moment. I had just enough painted Dark Elves and Daemons lying around to make a viable list - I just need a couple of extra characters. I've already painted up a Druchii Anointed, and have started work on the Sorceress to lead my army.

My Druchii Anointed, who is basically an angry sorcerous Daemon Elf with the offensive stats of a Chaos Lord.

The Shadows Return: Game 11

The perpetual game of catch-up continues. In this encounter, the main Empire force has finally made it onto the Albion mainland and is marching north from a far more southerly landing point than they had originally intended. Unfortunately they hit the Dark Elves who were on their way south...

Stefan the Black stared hard through the misty rain at the ground below. He shook his head to get the water out of his eyes, but it did little good; within moments it was as though he was blinking through tears again. He was soaked, his armour was soaked, and his mount, Nightwing, was also soaked. The Griffon didn't seem very happy, either. He was more irritable than usual and fought his rider's commands. Stefan didn't know if Nightwing was responding to his own foul mood, or was just as sick of being in the rain as he was. As they all were, really.

This whole expedition had been an exercise in misery. Albion was a dreadful place. It was in the middle of nowhere, cursed with the most unrelentingly lousy weather Stefan had ever encountered. And it was seemingly crawling with enemies.

Stefan recognized the shrieking of harpies long before he could make out their dark shapes through the mists. When he did finally see them, he could see them heading directly for him. Like they had known where he was long before he could have spotted them. This was impossible, of course. A harpy’s eyesight was really not much better than his own, and the rain would have been just as impenetrable for Nightwing's keen vision. More than likely the miserable creatures were attracted by his mood, thought Stefan.

It was only as he banked away from the approaching harpies that he noticed the dark shapes of the enemy columns advancing across the muddy fields below.

The Shadows Return: Game 6

The damp night air was filled with howls and shrieks as the Witch Elves capered in the flickering firelight around the altar of Khaine. Wounded High Elves were dragged into groups nearby, under the close guard of the Executioners. They would soon be sacrificed, and their blood added to the cauldron. Already their fallen general’s head had been mounted on one of the spikes of the altar, to the jubilation of the surrounding Witches.

Their own general had also fallen; cut down by the Asur prince’s blade. But Erathi was not yet finished. The wounded Death Hag had dragged herself up the steps of the altar, her blood leaving a trail behind her as it pumped from the mortal wound between her ribs. As the last of her strength left her, she hauled herself up to the rim of the bubbling cauldron of blood and with a final dedication to her bloody god, she toppled in. The cauldron attendants standing nearby brandished their ceremonial daggers overhead and gave ululating shrieks of triumph as they witnessed her final sacrifice. Her blood would be pleasing to Khaine.

It was into this scene that the Sorceress Moreki arrived, swooping down upon the wings of her Dark Pegasus. Shortly behind her came the shattered remnant of her army, trotting in from the darkness – a pitiful handful of Darkshards and Dreadspears, led by a slightly crestfallen-looking Assassin.

Dropping from the back of her mount, the Sorceress strode up to the foot of the altar. The attendants moved immediately to prevent her from ascending. She was not devoted to Khaine – the stairs were not hers to climb.

Moreki halted. “Where are your leaders?” she asked them with a sneer. Her fingers adjusted their grip upon her sorcerer’s staff – a reminder for them of her power. It was not really a threat. Not really.

Not yet.

“They have fallen.” There was no deference in the Witch Elf’s response, but nor was there any obvious hostility. “Their sacrifice is pleasing to Khaine.”

Moreki suppressed a sigh. These Khainite zealots were so tiresome. On the other hand, the power vacuum was convenient. “Then you are in need of new leadership,” she said this loudly so that others nearby would hear and take heed. “I will assume command of your army.”

The frenzied shrieking of the Witch Elves quieted and then died out completely. All of the assembled Druchii were now focused on what was taking place. Would anyone challenge her right to seize power?

One of the Witch Elf champions hissed and shoved her way past her comrades, then stopped and drew a poisoned blade with each hand. She glared at Moreki in a manner that the cauldron attendant had not. Perhaps she just didn’t like Sorcerers.  She snarled as she spoke, “We are the brides of Khaine. We will not bow to some upstart conjurer!”

Her snarls turned quickly to shrieks as dark energies flayed the skin from her bones with a back-handed gesture from Moreki. Within moments she was nothing more than a pile of bones in a silly metal bikini. Some of the surrounding Witch Elves hissed and growled, but none of them made a move toward the Sorceress.

“Is there anyone else?” she asked in a mocking voice.

It was at this moment that the light of the fires around them seemed to dim. The quiet bubbling of the cauldron rose steadily until it was boiling violently, steaming blood sloshing over the sides and onto the altar around it. A deep red glow emanated from the liquid, and as all turned their focus upon it, a dark silhouette rose from its depths.

“What manner of coup is this, Moreki? Do you dare to try and steal control of my army?” The voice that spoke was that of Erathi, however it had another, underlying tone that seemed to give it a strength and menace that it had lacked previously.

Moreki smiled sourly at this new arrival. Perhaps this was not going to go as well as she had hoped. “Hello, my sister.”

The Shadows Return: Game 4

Whilst the Lizardmen intercepted part of the advancing Dark Elf force, the High Elves were tasked with stopping the remainder. This battle was another Meeting Engagement, fought between Nick Gentile's High Elves and Tim Stewart's Witch Elves Dark Elves (there are totally some models that are not Witch Elves in there somewhere)...

If you didn't see it already, an introduction for this game is included here.

As I was busy playing on another table, Owen scribed for this game and took photos with his phone. I have included his original notes at the bottom, as they are always amusing. And mostly nonsensical. But what can you do?

The Shadows Return: Game 3

After 2 games on the first weekend, there were still 4 of us who had not played. On the second weekend the remaining 4 players faced off. Rather than make every game a wacky scenario, we decided that both of those games would be Meeting Engagements as the High Elves and Lizardmen moved to intercept the Dark Elves, who had already landed on Albion and were on the march.

This game was between my Dark Elves and Nick Hoen's Lizardmen. An introduction for this game was included here.

Game 3: The Sorceress and the Frog

The great Slann Qur-myt surveyed the field with heavy-lidded eyes as his palanquin drifted to a halt behind his own lines. Ranks of nimble Skink warriors were rapidly assembling before him, moving to respond to the Dark Elf formations that had emerged from the misty rain on the far side of the field. He had commanded that the army travel in silence as they attempted to ambush their prey, however Qur-myt knew that the Dark Elf Sorceress had felt his presence upon the Winds of Magic and alerted her allies.

It was always thus. He was both on the battlefield, and he was not. His consciousness rode the Winds of Magic like a master sailor, roaming where it willed and observing much. It could be a great advantage, but it made his presence difficult to hide from others with the skill to detect it. The Skink attendant on the arm of his palanquin sighed, but the sigh was not his own. It was Qur-myt’s sigh. The Skink did everything for him. Qur-myt was busy being barely-there. He was also a bit lazy. Flying lounge chairs did that to you.

The ground shook slightly as the monstrous dinosaurs that served the Lizardmen were goaded into position by their Skink drivers. Closest to Qur-myt was the great Skink hero, Ivyl-knivyl. Ivyl-knivyl was brave. He was daring. There was nothing he would not ride over with his 20,000lb Stegadon. Many things were flatter than they once had been as a result of Ivyl-knivyl’s fearless driving – enemies, trees, ancient irreplaceable relics in the temple city of Tlaxtlan – nothing was safe from the daring of Ivyl-knivyl.
Ivyl-knivyl flattens some trees as he carelessly drives his Stegadon into position.

  • Reaper Bolt Thrower
  • Reaper Bolt Thrower
  • 5 Warlocks

Swedish Comp: 13.5

It’s a brave man that will go into a tournament without a BSB (unless you’re talking undead or something). In Dustin’s case I gather this was largely a comp-driven decision, but an army with little magic and no battle standard is likely to have a hard time of things.

This game felt like one I should be able to win, provided I could keep the keeper from dying. Thus far this had proven difficult, but I needed to preserve the points if possible.
Deployment and vanguards. There is a hydra there somewhere. See if you can spot him...

The Battle of Bumpkin: Part 1

A 2500 point battle report between Nick Gentile's Dark Elves and Greg Johnson's Empire, as chronicled by that most questionable of note-takers, Owen Top.

Hellebron stalked through the burning human village, a scowl of dissatisfaction upon her face. Blood dripped from the blades she carried in either hand, but it did nothing to brighten her mood. She had been persuaded to launch this raid upon the northern Empire town of Bumpkin with the promise of a large population with weak defences. It was a certain slaughter. She and her sisters would bathe in an ocean of blood. The mere thought of it had been enough to get her ancient, withered heart racing.

She should have known the promises were too good to be true. By the time her forces had landed near the town, the humans had already raised the alarm, and many had fled inland, preferring to take their chances with the dangers of the forests than standing to face the fate awaiting them at the merciless hands of the Druchii. The town was still defended by a combination of soldiers and militia, however they were relatively few in number and the fight was over quickly. Worse; they had stood their ground bravely and died fighting. There had been precious few victims left for the Khainites to torment and murder in a satisfying manner.

With most of the town's inhabitants long gone and no real sport to be found, Hellebron had been forced to draw what satisfaction she could from murdering the odd litter of adorable puppies that had been left behind. Even this had done little to lift her spirits. With so little bloodshed to be enjoyed, the frown furrowing her brow at that moment would likely be stuck there permanently. She could almost feel her youthful complexion fading as her aggitation increased. If should could not revel in a true slaughter, the least she could do was to enjoy a little more suffering. Perhaps she should torture her scouts who had brought her on this fruitless expedition in the first place. And then maybe they could take a detour on the way home, and find some cute little baby seals to destroy.

The thought of making something cute and cuddly suffer lifted her mood somewhat, as one of her scouts (who would soon be suffering terribly at her hand) hurried toward her. "My queen," he saluted. "Another force of soldiers approaches. It seems they have ridden to try to relieve the town. The human Emperor's personal standard flies with them."

In spite of her previous brooding, Hellebron could not help but smile wickedly at this news. Perhaps she would have a chance to cause some real suffering today, after all.

The Witch King had fallen, but so too had the Everqueen's personal champion, Tyrion. It was a psychological blow for both sides, but the High Elves were gaining the upper hand, and dared to hope that this battle might indeed be the moment the invasion was halted and turned back.

The frustration of the Cold One Knights engaging Teclis' Archer bodyguard had reached fever pitch by the time they were surrounded and destroyed by the thundering charge of Silver Helms, Star Dragon and Frostheart Phoenix. It was a terrible assault, and the outcome of the combat was never really in question. The sole survivor of the charge was N'kari's battle standard bearer, who died trying to protect his banner as half the High Elf army closed in around him. Teclis had been rescued, and with him the left flank had been saved.
There's no kill like overkill. The High Elves apply excessive force in removing the Cold Ones from Teclis' flank.

The battle continued to be closely fought, with neither side gaining a clear upper hand. The winds of magic gusted and swirled strongly across the battlefield, and the Mages of the High Elves sensed that the moment for dramatic intervention had now come. Opening themselves to the energy around them and channelling it into them, they prepared to unleash a sorcerous onslaught upon their enemies.
The situation is making Teclis nervous.

With dozens of regiments struggling in bitter hand-to-hand combat and the Witch King having finally committed himself to battle, matters were coming to a head. If the High Elves could push through now, perhaps the Witch King's stranglehold over Ulthuan could be broken.

Behind the Dark Elf lines, another Comet of Cassandora crashed to earth with thunderous force, though slightly less devastation than the High Elf Archmage had hoped. Two enemy Bolt Throwers were vaporised, although the crew of a third managed to dive aside and avoid serious injury. The blast was alarming enough to send the small unit of Crossbowmen guarding the machines running from the field, their duties forgotten.

On the left flank, the Chosen continued to hack at the flank of the White Lions, however true to their reputation, they resisted stubbornly and a single survivor stood his ground defiantly. The frustration of the elite Chaos Warriors was evident, but it was they who had failed to break through to fresh opposition.
I'll take you all!! I don't even need a blade on my axe! I'll club you with my stick (not a euphemism)!

With the enemy advancing and tide seemingly going against them, proud High Elves launched themselves into the fray all along the line. On the left flank, units leapt to the assistance of their struggling allies. The White Lions who had been waiting in the forest decided that the time had come to intervene. They charged into the rear of the massive regiment of Dreadspears assaulting the now-riderless Star Dragon.

As Urian's bisected form crumpled to the ground, the High Elves gave a great cheer and surged forward. Having dragged himself into Malhandir's saddle, Tyrion surveyed the seemingly endless ranks of his fallen kindred, and thought better of attacking them alone. Instead he wheeled about and rejoined the ranks of his comrades. The Silver Helms parted ranks to allow him space, cheering him as he formed up at their head. He was sorely wounded but he sat tall in his saddle, resplendent in his ancient armour. Even as he did so, he felt the pain from his wounds lessen as the Everqueen used the power of the Star of Avelorn upon her brow to heal him.

Battle of Finuval Plain: Deployment and the Duel

Prologue

From the north they came. A fleet of ships led by the Black Arks of Naggaroth landed on the shores of Ulthuan, and a tide of Dark Elves and their Chaos allies swept across the land. The Witch King had returned at last to claim his prize, and the High Elves were powerless to stop him. In battle after battle, the forces of the Asur were defeated. They had been unprepared for the size and savagery of the invasion, and they stood on the brink of annihilation.

Even Avelorn, the very heart of Ulthuan, had been despoiled. Alarielle, the newly crowned Everqueen, had narrowly avoided capture thanks to the efforts of Prince Tyrion, descendant of Aenarion. Together they had fled into the forests, but Tyrion was wounded and they were finally run to ground by N'kari, a mighty Keeper of Secrets. Malekith had bound the daemon to him with the promise of the Everqueen's soul, and N'kari would not be denied by a wounded princeling. Sorely wounded though he was, Tyrion rose to fight – and was batted aside without a second thought. The devastation of her land had left Alarielle incapable of defending herself, and it seemed her fate was sealed.

It was then that Tyrion's brother Teclis finally arrived. Where Tyrion had become a warrior of renown, Teclis had been mastering his studies at the White Tower and was now a mage of incredible power. No sooner had be arrived than he banished N'kari from the mortal plane and healed his wounded brother as he lay dying. He then guided the Everqueen and her protector clear of the Druchii net that had been closing around them, and they rejoined the remaining forces of the Asur as they mustered on the Plain of Finuval.
Finuval Plain
A High Elf temple in one corner of the field. Thanks, Hamish!
From all across Ulthuan, the last armies of the High Elves had gathered together. Finuval Plain would be their final stand. The Phoenix King remained besieged in Lothern and the White Tower in Saphery still stood, but defeat here would mean the war was over.

The situation was not lost upon Malekith. On the other side of the plain, his vast forces gathered, preparing to crush this final act of defiance. Prisoners were sacrificed and daemons were summoned. N'kari himself was dragged back to the material plane with the sacrifice of 1000 screaming victims, his mind fixed upon the twin descendants of Aenarion and his revenge. Hordes of armoured Chaos Warriors honed their weapons and prepared for battle. The Witch King was ready. After 5000 years of exile, Ulthuan would finally be his.

Finuval Plain: Rules for Urian and the Opening Duel

There is a lot to lay out for this battle and I'm not quite ready to post the first part of the report yet, so here is something I have neglected to post until now: the rules we used for Urian Poisonblade and his role in the battle. There were a couple of factors in how we balanced these rules, and some of them we didn't much care about (like the points value, which simply mirrors Tyrion). All we really wanted was a close fight to open the game.

Urian Poisonblade

410 points

M5 WS10 BS9 S4 T3 W3 I10 A4 Ld10

Special Rules: Always Strikes First, Hatred (High Elves), Killing Blow, Murderous Prowess

Supernatural Reflexes: Urian has a 4+ ward save.

Champion of Malekith: Must always issue and accept challenges. In addition, the contemptuous ease with which Urian dispatches his opponents is extremely demoralising for the enemy. Wounds inflicted by Urian count double for combat resolution.

Equipment:
Blackheart Armour: Magic armor. It grants Urian a 1+ armour save.

Urian's Reaper: Magic weapon. Gives the wielder +1 Strength and the Poisoned Attacks and Armor Piercing special rules.

The Duel
At the start of the game (after deployment), Tyrion (on foot) fights a challenge against Urian Poisonblade in the centre of the table. The challenge is completely resolved (until one side is slain) before the battle commences. No break tests are taken during the challenge. When the challenge is completed, the victor wins the first turn for his side. If the challenge is a draw (ie they die simultaneously), roll off for the first turn. If Tyrion wins the duel, he is immediately replaced by the mounted model before the battle proper begins, as Malhandir races to his aid. Urian will slum it on foot.

Finuval Plain: Sifting through the aftermath

The battle of Finuval Plain was now a few days ago, and I've had some time to recover from what was a pretty hectic day (and a fairly frenetic lead-up to it, as well). Of course, now I am left to sort through the notes and photos we took, and try to make heads or tails of the game. For a normal game of 2500 points or so, this is not a big deal. When there is 10 times that much stuff on the table, it's a lot of work. So you will have to bear with me as I get moving and start to put the battle report together. As with Hel Fenn, it will doubtless be posted a bit at a time as I make progress. In the meantime, here are a few teaser photos (I took over 550 pictures, though not all of them worked out as I might have hoped).

Still setting up... What a mess.

Coming soon: The Battle of Finuval Plain

It was around this time last year that a number of us gathered together and created the colossal battle report of Hel Fenn. Recently it has become clear that people around here expect this sort of thing to become an annual event – there have been lots of questions like “so what will the big game be this time?” To be honest, I hadn't intended for it to become a regular thing... But with so many people clearly itching to have another go, I kind of figured: why not?

I decided it would be preferable to avoid the armies that featured in Hel Fenn, rather than just featuring the same things over and over again. So that ruled out battles involving Empire and Vampire Counts. It left plenty of other armies to choose from, but it's not always the easiest thing to scratch together 20,000 points or so of painted models for a single race. In the end we settled for another classic match-up: High Elves vs Dark Elves.

The Battle of Finuval Plain is another famous battle in Warhammer lore. It was the climax of an invasion of Ulthuan by Dark Elves and their Chaos allies. It was basically a final stand for the High Elves after a disastrous campaign in which they had been repeatedly beaten and driven back on their own soil. However just as their fate seemed sealed, Tyrion and Teclis rose to prominence and led their people to victory. There are more details than that, but we'll save those for later.

I'm still trying to sort out exactly how large the game will be and who will be playing, but I think the game will be at least as large as Hel Fenn, and it will happen in the next couple of weeks. So watch this space...

Lores of Magic: The Lore of Dark Magic

I feel slightly bad that I've seen numerous searches hitting this blog looking for the Lore of Dark Magic, and of course they're all finding the old Lore from the previous book. Now that there is a new book, I should really be updating the review. If you actually were looking for the Lore from the previous book, you can find it here.

Lores of Magic: The Lore of Dark Magic
Dark Elves are the only race with access to Dark Magic, although nowadays they have the full range of the Lores of Battle Magic in the rulebook to choose from as well. So, with 9 Lores to choose from, let's hope Dark Magic stacks up.
