Empire Ogre Hobby Update

It's a new year, and very nearly not even the first month in the new year at this point. As usual, time is getting away from me. But that's OK, because I have hobby progress to show you! The annual pilgrimage to Cancon happened on the weekend just past, and whilst I am yet to put together my usual report of the tournament, I can show you the stuff I was rather frantically painting right up to the day before the event. I had decided I wanted to use the tournament as motivation to make some progress on my Ogres, and that's what I have to show now.

First up, I now have a Tyrant on Stonehorn! To my mind, this was an option I very much wanted if I was going to take Ogres to a tournament. He's big and scary. I don't know about competent, but you can't have everything, right?
Having decided that the things I was working on would be in the style of my Empire Ogres (rather than the similar sized force of more traditional Ogres I also have lying around), I needed a suitable rider. The Ogre is a mix of 3D printed bits from Infernal Miniatures (though the shield and pauldrons I sourced from some Bretonnians somewhere, and adjusted them to fit). The hammer is one of my old putty creations.
I didn't really know what to make of some of the details on the Stonehorn. It was already basically assembled (minus the rider) when I picked it up second hand many years ago. It actually had the wrong backplate on (made for a second rider), so I ended up hacking at it with a saw, greenstuffing some cloth over the hole, and adding a mix of plastic and printed parts.
The camera refused to focus on him, but I'm pretty sure the Gnoblar was actually my general. Probably explains a few things, really.
Lots of weapons ended up in the pile of stuff on the back. I'm sure a Tyrant could make use of some of them. Note the relatively plain shield. I have a plan for that (and all the plain shields in my Ogre, and maybe even Empire force). But I didn't have time to deal with it before the tournament.
Next up, I added a second group of Mournfangs. I felt they were important for the army list, and these Infernal Miniatures guys were much better than my old plan of massively converting official GW ones. Again, I changed their shoulders and added the shields. I think the rest was basically unchanged.
These took a long time to paint. The fur sculpting is pretty smooth, and I felt obliged to stay pretty clean with my brush and add a bit more texture with paint, rather than trying to drybrush. Of course, that meant I was fairly carefully painting the fur on 4 monster models. That took time.
I really like the rhinos. The kickstarter also had bulls. I'm seriously considering printing some of those and seeing if I can give them some Highland cow energy with a bit of greenstuff, in order to fit my theme. We'll see.
I didn't have time to add anything to the banner, but I'll have to come up with something.

Then we come to the Slaughtermaster pulling a cauldron. I've never actually painted a relatively normal Butcher or Slaughtermaster before, so this was a new, slightly more conventional addition to my force.
The model is again from Infernal Miniatures. But he was not the most handsome chappy I'd ever seen, and I felt like he didn't really fit my theme at all. So I made him a dodgy knock off of a grey wizard's hat. It's a token thing.
My army list had him carry the Skullplucker, so I equipped the model accordingly.
I... don't know what he's cooking in there, but I sure wouldn't eat it. I'm sure the ingredients were enemies, rather than my own friendly Empire soldiers. They'd taste terrible.
I also had to scramble to ensure I had a baggage train, and realised the Rhinox that pulls my Ironblaster was never glued together, so... now he can pull a cart sometimes instead. This was thrown together from bits I just had lying around, and a little putty for the harness.
And objective markers! Seemed like a good use for the old baggage Gnoblars (one of whom scored a new hat from leftover greenstuff).
My BSB looked a bit sad next to some of the new additions, so I threw him on a taller base, give him an actual weapon, and finally painted something onto the banner. This design is based on what I'm planning to do with my shields, and I was pretty happy with how it came out.
The other side looked sad and I didn't want to try my luck with a second octopus, so I hurriedly threw on a cross.

That covers everything I've worked on since my last post. I'm not yet sure if the next month will see my shift back to the slow grow and the Nuln Empire, but if it does, it will probably shift again pretty soon. I think I'm ready to slowly grow in another direction. In the meantime, I'll have to get cracking on my Cancon report. 'Til then!
